How to prepare for JEE Advanced?

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced is one of the most competitive exams. Thousands of candidates appear for this examination, aiming for a spot in some of the well-known IITs each year.

To achieve a top score and secure admission to such excellent institutes, it is important for candidates to study hard and have a focused approach to their preparation.

The preparation for JEE does not only require hard work but also a well-structured study plan and consistent effort.

Here are some tips that you can follow to prepare for JEE:

  • Understanding the Exam Pattern and Syllabus:

JEE Advanced is a Computer-Based Test (CBT). Candidates can attempt this examination in two mediums: English and Hindi. The exam consists of two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Each paper covers three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Paper 1 and Paper 2 contain 54 questions, with 18 questions allotted to each subject.

Before you begin preparing for JEE, you need to understand the syllabus and exam pattern. Go through the syllabus of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Note down the chapters, and topics that you need to cover.

  • Managing Your Time and Preparing a Study Plan:

You have already studied these topics during your board examinations. Therefore, now you should dedicate your focus, time and efforts, practizing and revising all the topics.

Prepare a time-table that will balance daily practice, revision, and time for mock tests. Make sure your time-table dedicates equal time to all the subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. You should include short breaks in your schedule. Do not overexert yourself. As, too much stress and pressure might lead to confusion and anxiety.

  • Practicing and Studying Regularly:

It is essential to practice and revise all the subjects regularly. As mentioned above, you should allocate equal time to each of the three subjects. You can create concise notes and flashcards to remember the formulas and key concepts.

In addition to this, try solving Previous Year Questions. Initially you can refer to your textbooks and reference books to understand the concept and strategies used to  solve these questions. Once you gain confidence, you can continue solving them independently without any help from the books.

  • Prioritize Learning from Text Books and NCERT Books:

Your state board text books and NCERT books are extremely crucial for your preparation. These books already offer all the study material that you are should cover. Students tend to skip the basics and usually jump on to multiple reference books which creates unnecessary complexity and pressure.

Therefore, candidates should stick to the basics, and only utilize one reliable book for reference and additional practice.

  • Taking Mock Tests:

To assess your knowledge, start taking mock tests once you feel confident enough in your preparation. Taking mock tests will help you understand the exam pattern, and the time you need to utilize for each question. Once you complete the mock test, you can also check which topics require more attention and which ones you have mastered.

As the examination is in a CBT mode, you will also gain a familiarity with the examination pattern. Mock tests are available on the jeeadv.ac.in under the resources section.

  • Clearing Doubts and Asking for Assistance:

If you encounter any difficulties with any topic or subject, kindly ask for assistance from your teachers and mentors. Students usually hesitate and are afraid to ask for help. This only leaves their doubts unresolved.

Therefore ask for help, when required.

Eat a healthy balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and get enough sleep. Staying healthy and mentally well is also crucial for optimal performance in exams.
