NEET UG 2025: Distribution and Weightage for Biology Subject
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will be conducting the NEET UG 2025 exam on 4th May 2025 (Sunday). The exam will be held for a duration of 3 hours, i.e., from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The examination carries a total of 720 marks. The optional questions, that were previously included during the COVID-19 period, have been removed. Therefore candidates will now have to attempt a total number of questions to 180.
These 180 questions are distributed across three main subjects:
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
The Biology section divides into two sub-parts: Botany and Zoology. Each of the sub-parts share equal number of questions.
This proper distribution of questions will allow candidates to understand and all the main subjects required for medical admission. As the NEET exam is now around the corner, students should study regularly with diligence. It is important not to overwork yourself. To help students with their preparation, we have created a breakdown of the marks, number of questions, and weightage for each subject. This will provide a clear understanding of what to expect on your NEET examination.

Distribution of marks for NEET UG subjects
The main subjects that candidates are supposed to study for NEET are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). The exam consists of a total of 180 questions, distributed among these subjects. Physics and Chemistry each have 45 questions, carrying 180 marks each. In NEET exam, Biology is divided into Botany and Zoology. This section consists of 90 questions and is worth 360 marks. The total of all subjects combined sums up to 720 marks.
Subject | Number of Questions | Marks |
Physics | 45 | 180 |
Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
Biology | 90 (Botany 45 + Zoology 45) | 360 |
Total | 180 | 720 |
Biology Sub-topic Weightage and Question Distribution for NEET UG (Botany)
As mentioned above, Biology carries the highest marks in the NEET exam. The Biology section divides into two sub-parts: Botany and Zoology. Each section consists of 45 questions and contribute 360 marks in total. Let us first take a look at the breakdown of sub-topics in the Botany section.
Sub-topics in Botany section | Average number of Questions asked | Weightage in percentage |
Plant Kingdom | 1 | 2% |
Sexual Reproduction Flowering Plants | 3-4 | 6% |
Anatomy of Flowering Plants | 3-4 | 6% |
Morphology of Flowering Plants | 4 | 8% |
Plant Physiology- Plant Growth and Growth Hormones | 4 | 8% |
Plant Physiology I- Photosynthesis in Higher Plants | 3-4 | 6% |
Plant Physiology II- Respiration in Plants | 2 | 4% |
Genetics-I | 4 | 8% |
Genetics-II | 4 | 8% |
Cell Biology | 4 | 8% |
Biomolecule-I | 2-3 | 4% |
Biomolecule-II | 2-3 | 4% |
Biotechnology | 4 | 8% |
Ecology- Ecosystem | 1-2 | 2% |
Ecology- Biodiversity and Conservation | 5 | 10% |
Ecology- Organisms and Population | 1-2 | 2% |
Biology in Human Welfare | 1 | 2% |
Biological Classification | 2 | 4% |
Here, we can see that Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation carries the highest weightage. Therefore, candidates should prioritize this topic and study it thoroughly to score better. Similarly, you can allocate more time to topics with higher weightage and less time to those with lower weightage. Below, we have included a chart for a clearer and easier understanding of the above data. Kindly have a look.

Biology Sub-topic Weightage and Question Distribution for NEET UG (Zoology)
Zoology section consists of Let us now see a similar break-down for Zoology section.
Sub-topics in Zoology section | Average number of Questions asked | Weightage in percentage |
Animal Kingdom-I | 3 | 6% |
Animal Kingdom-II | 3 | 6% |
Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health | 7 | 14% |
Excretory Products and Their Elimination | 2-3 | 4% |
Neural Control and Coordination | 2-3 | 4% |
Breathing and Exchange of Gases | 2 | 4% |
Genetics-I | 4 | 8% |
Genetics-II | 4 | 8% |
Cell Biology | 4 | 8% |
Biomolecule-II | 2 | 4% |
Biomolecule-II | 2 | 4% |
Biotechnology | 4 | 8% |
Chemical Coordination and Integration | 2 | 4% |
Structural Organisation in Animal | 1 | 2% |
Origin and Evolution | 4 | 8% |
Biology In Human Welfare-Human Health and Disease | 5 | 10% |
Ecology-Organisms and Population | 1 | 2% |
Body Fluids and Circulation | 2 | 4% |
Similar to the Botany section, we can see in Zoology section that Human Reproduction and Reproductive Health carries the highest weightage. Students can therefore allocate more time to this topic and study it thoroughly. Below, we have included a chart for a clearer and easier understanding of the above data. Kindly have a look.

What else students need to know
The distribution given above shows that Biology carries the most marks in the NEET examination. Therefore, students should carefully review the syllabus and plan their studies accordingly. Having this approach will help them revise effectively and gain a better understanding of the topics.
It will also allow them to identify areas that require more focus. However, candidates should continue their thorough preparation across all sub-topics.
