NEET UG 2025: Distribution and Weightage for Chemistry Subject
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will be conducting the NEET UG 2025 exam. The examination is May 4, 2025, (Sunday). The duration of the examination is for 3 hours i.e., from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The NEET UG Examination is of 720 marks.
Before 2024, during the Covid-19 period, NTA had added optional questions. This step was taken to decrease the complexity of the examination during a challenging period. By offering flexibility, the NTA aimed to reduce exam stress, as the pandemic lead to difficulties in access to reliable sources and study material. Due to inconsistent school timings, lockdowns, and fear of the virus, students found to challenging to prepare for the examination effectively.
However, these questions were removed from the NEET UG 2024 Examination, as the conditions returned back to normal. The students were able to go to their classes, and schools on regular basis. As the situation stabilized, the NTA pushed itself to bring back the exam to its original form. Now, there are only 180 questions for the NEET Exam.
These 180 questions are distributed across three main subjects:
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
The Chemistry section consists of three sub-sections : Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry.
They are further divided as Physical Chemistry-I, Physical Chemistry-II, Inorganic Chemistry-I, Inorganic Chemistry-II, Organic Chemistry-I, and Organic Chemistry-II.
Each of the sub-sections share nearly an equal number of questions.
This proper distribution of questions will allow candidates to understand all the main subjects required for medical admission. As the NEET exam is now around the corner, students should study regularly with diligence. It is important not to overwork yourself. To help students with their preparation, we have created a breakdown of the marks, number of questions, and weightage for each subject. This will provide a clear understanding of what to expect on your NEET examination.
A Break-down of Marks for the NEET UG Subjects:
The candidates should cover these three subjects for NEET- Physics, Chemistry (Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry), and Biology.
The exam consists of a total of 180 questions. These are divided among these subjects. Physics and Chemistry each have 45 questions, carrying 180 marks each. Whereas, Biology subject consists of 90 questions for 360 marks, carrying the total to a 720 marks paper.
Subjects | Number of Questions | Marks |
Physics | 45 | 180 |
Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
Biology | 90 (Botany 45 + Zoology 45) | 360 |
Total | 180 | 720 |
Chemistry Subject Weightage and Question Distribution for NEET UG
The NEET exam has 45 questions from Chemistry, each worth 4 marks, totaling 180 marks. There is a fairly balanced distribution of topics of Class 11 and Class 12. Though the exam leans a little more towards the Class 12 Syllabus.
An approximate of 45-50% of the weightage is from Class 11, and the remaining 50-55% is from Class 12. This is because the syllabus of Class 12 is much more advanced and deeper. Therefore, there is a greater emphasis on it.
Below we will see a break-down of topics, number of questions, and their weightage in Physical, Inorganic, and Organic Chemistry
Division for Physical Chemistry (NEET UG):

Overview of all Chemistry Sub-sections:
As we compile the data given above, the weightage is divided in the following manner: Physical Chemistry carries the highest weightage, including 40% of the total score with 20 questions. Organic Chemistry has 16 questions, which contributes 32% to the overall score, while Inorganic Chemistry comprises 28% with 14 questions.
Sub-sections in Chemistry | Total Number of Questions | Overall Percentage |
Physical Chemistry | 20 | 40% |
Organic Chemistry | 16 | 32% |
Inorganic Chemistry | 14 | 28% |
This distribution shows us that Physical Chemistry has a greater emphasis in the exam. Organic Chemistry also plays a significant role, while Inorganic Chemistry holds the least weightage.
This highlights that students should give more time and effort to Physical Chemistry. They should avoid skipping any topics that are a part of it. However, candidates must also give equal importance to Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. They should not skip any fundamentals, and key concepts.
A thorough preparation will ensure an overall good score.
How to Prepare for Chemistry for NEET UG 2025
As you have already covered the syllabus during your boards, you should now only allocate time to revise and practice all concepts. Make a proper schedule and distribute equal time to all sub-sections while studying for Chemistry.
For IUPACs, and other formulas make flashcards with colourful pens. This will help you remember the material better. Make sure to note down all the important concepts chapter wise. Refer to one or maximum two reliable reference books. Do not overburden or confuse yourself with larger study material. Study from the basics, i.e. your State Board textbooks and NCERT textbooks.
Take mock tests and solve Previous Year Questions (PYQs). Keep in touch with your teachers and mentors, in case you face any difficulties while studying. Do not hesitate to ask for guidance. Do not ignore your health. Eat a proper balanced diet, take good sleep, and stay mentally happy. A proper study plan, along with maintaining good physical health, is essential for achieving strong performance in exams.
